2010 Report

The third annual Westside 10k took place last Saturday in poor weather, having just caught the end of the predicted gales and rain. The organisers at Westside runners had created a new and challenging “out and back course” from the Shawbost Old School community centre, which gave runners four kilometres of a strong tail wind before turning east then South into the wind, for the last six kilometres via the Bragar village back road. Such was the quality of the field this year, that one runner who ran the same time this year and last, was 9th last year, but only18th this year.

The race was won by Jethro Lennox, who won the World Long Distance Mountain Race in 2008, and was Scottish Hill Running Champion for four years. Jethro was on honeymoon in the Hebrides and decided to run the 10k, winning in a time of 37.11. Jethro said afterwards he very much enjoyed the event and asked about other races being held on the islands during the year.

Second again this year was Jonny Pritchard of Stornoway Running Club (SRC), who ran several minutes faster than last year – a good omen for his attempt at a sub 3 hour marathon at Elgin in two weeks time. Robert Jones (also of SRC) ran a superb race to finish third, ahead of Martin Stewart of West Side Runners, who has already won several 10k races this season. Donald Smith from West Side Runners was fifth and first male veteran. Marina Murray was first female, ahead of visitor Hatty Sutton, and promising SRC runner Ceit Stewart. Marilyn Hanlon won the female veteran prize.

As well as the 10k race, the event also held a fun run, which was an interesting 4.8k race partly along the shore and machair. First male was Hugh McKenzie, and first female was SRC’s Rebecca Munro (who beat her dad, SRC’s Ross Munro!).

All the runners were treated to soup, sandwiches, and tea by the ladies of the Westside Historical Society. A raffle was held prior to the presentation of prizes by Councillor Coinneach Murray.

The organisers of the race are well pleased with the success of the events, despite the weather, and would like to thank the Westside Historical Society and Westside Duke of Edinburgh Group for catering and marshalling respectively, local councillors Coinneach Murray and Iain Morrison and the Shawbost Community Council for financial assistance plus everyone who helped to organise the event and donated raffle prizes. Also the Co-op and Tesco supermarkets plus WI Health Promotion for donations towards competitor refreshments.
